ChatGPT is under scrutiny for potentially hindering crucial skill development in learners, such as critical thinking and writing competency. Moreover, the program so far lacks the ability to critically evaluate information, leading to significant consequences regarding AI-generated content. However, how can we turn the tables and use ChatGPT to promote critical thinking in various teaching and learning situations, empowering learners for adept interaction with AI?
To answer this question in a more nuanced manner, the interactive presentation begins with a brief introduction to the scope and limits of ChatGPT in the context of teaching and learning. Following this, the concept of critical thinking is elaborated, presenting key aspects that relate to the sovereign use of AI. Subsequently, together we explore different implementation possibilities and scenarios with ChatGPT, which are aligned with general design-principles for fostering CT effectively. For instance, when appropriately implemented, ChatGPT is effective in generating productive disruptions, facilitating playful exploration of diverse perspectives on a topic, or supporting the development and evaluation of solutions to complex problems in a creative way.

Contents:

  • Functionality of the Chatbot (Version 3.5)
  • Scope, limitations and risks of ChatGPT in the context of teaching and learning
  • Concepts and promotion strategies of critical thinking
  • Quality criteria in prompting
  • Concrete implementation examples with ChatGPT
  • Live dialogue with the Chatbot

The presentation is not only relevant for university teachers, but also for designers of teaching-learning situations that are to be digitally enriched and implemented - especially on remote self-study phases, e.g. in international degree programs. Interested students are invited as well to share their perspectives on this topic. Effective utilization of AI tools like ChatGPT can enhance educational experiences and prepare learners for a digitally connected world.
