In June, 80 participants from various countries, all eager to expand their expertise in sustainable development, gathered together at the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT) for the Alumni SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Project, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This programme aims to enhance alumni competencies, foster professional networks, and promote knowledge transfer and collaboration with German institutions.

The programme was structured two-fold: At first, the visit of the Smarter E Europe and Intersolar exhibitions, where participants explored cutting-edge advancements in renewable energy and smart technology solutions, followed by two camp days in Freising and Triesdorf.

At the Weihenstephan campus, Vice President for International affairs and Diversity Prof. Dr. Carsten Lorz welcomed the 80-international guests, before they experienced an array of insightful tours, like a visit to the HSWT Incubation Centre, guided by Dr. Veronika Hannus, the exploration of the Smart Indoor Farming facilities with Prof. Heike Susanne Mempel and a comprehensive tour of the Institute for Food Technology, led by Prof. Özlem Özmutlu-Karslioglu.

The subsequent day, participants moved to the Triesdorf campus, where they visited the Dairy Farm and Biogas Facility. These visits provided practical insights into modern dairy farming, sustainable agricultural practices and renewable energy applications in modern farming.

After the days at HSWT, the group was split in four parts and went to different Universities in Siegen, Kassel, Leipzig and HSWT in Triesdorf. Each university designed another one-week workshop. The group hosted by HSWT was participating in a seminar organised by Dr. Bernd Müller and Anis Dzankovic on "Digitalization of Agriculture: Smart & Precision Farming." This seminar featured a series of lectures and hands-on activities, including the visits to local farms and companies to observe precision farming techniques, and seminars on digital solutions in milk production, precision farming technologies and near-infrared spectroscopy applications.

Participants were immersed in both theoretical knowledge and practical applications, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of how digital technologies can enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability. The programme successfully established new professional networks and reinforced existing ones, promoting ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange among the alumni.

The Alumni SDG Project at HSWT not only strengthened the participants' skills but also highlighted the university's commitment to fostering sustainable development through innovative agricultural practices. We look forward to continuing this important work in future programmes.
